Services to support people with the increased cost of living

Resurrected bites run two ‘Give as you can cafés’. One on a Wednesday in Harrogate at Westpark United Reformed Church from 10am-2pm and one in Knaresborough on Fridays at Gracious Street Methodist church, same time.

People give as they can for a meal and a drink, even if its only £1. They also have a ‘give as you can’ shop set up with groceries at both as well.

They also run two community grocery stores where people can sign up for the year for £5 and then a small family can get a full food shop for £3 and slightly more for a bigger family.

St Peters church, Harrogate town centre run a breakfast club Monday -Saturday 8.15-9am, last orders at 8.45am.

Harrogate homeless project can provide emergency overnight accommodation, they have hostels to help people rebuild their lives and moving on housing for the final steps in independent living. They also run Springboard day centre to support homeless people with day to day care including food, showers and GP appointments.

The Harrogate Staywell Project run by Horton Housing can support people with mental health and housing issues who either own or rent their home and can be supported by a key worker in their own home in various ways to improve their wellbeing and get back on track.

Harrogate Borough Council coordinate housing and can be contacted for homelessness support and support to access council housing via an application form and waiting list. They also offer bond and rent schemes.

People can access food and utility vouchers through NYLAF- North Yorkshire Local Assistance Fund.

However other options such as food banks, family/friends/charities have to be tried first and people are limited to the amount of vouchers they can receive in 6 months.

An authorised agent must apply on behalf of the person, such as CAB, social services or Terri and Emma at the surgery.

Sometimes people will be asked to provide proof of benefit entitlement if the application is audited.

White goods can also be accessed, 1 item per year for free with an item of furniture along side, i.e bed and bedding. Same rules apply as above.

Food bank vouchers can be provided by social services, GP’s, CAB,  Social prescribers.

If people are in need of cheap furniture they can visit Essential needs or St Michaels hospice and get second hand furniture at a much lower cost, especially if on benefits, with delivery.

Warm and Well North Yorkshire- Practical solutions to reduce fuel poverty and support to help people remain warm and well in their homes.

Referrals can be made if people are living in or at risk of a cold home, struggling to pay their energy bills, or worried about winter. Referrals can be made by the person themselves or a professional – warmandwell.org.uk

The Living Well team in NYCC are able to offer 12 weeks of support to help people access and travel to all of the services above if needed. NYCC 01609 780 780 or Can be referred by the SP’s at the surgery if they feel the person needs more than a one off appointment and signposting.
